Prelude Music Academy

Lesson and Practice Expectations

Mastering an instrument is very exciting but it does require commitment and a desire to learn. Consistency is important, Regular practice assures rapid improvement of musicianship and skills. Students are enrolled with the understanding that they have access to a piano or keyboard, guitar, or drum set in their home for practice purposes.

Parents are welcome to observe any lesson but are requested to refrain from actively participating or interrupting the lesson.  This distracts both the student and the teacher and diminishes the teacher’s role; it also makes it difficult to establish a teacher-student rapport.  Teachers would be glad to take the last few minutes of the lesson and review the practice expectations for the following week and answer any questions or concerns that may arise.

Students are given a notebook detailing their assignments and to keep track of their practice log. Rewards for practicing and mastery of songs are accrued, via our unique “Music Bucks” incentive program.

The practice environment at home should be quiet and free from the sounds of a TV or other distractions. Practice should be considered a priority, just like school homework or any other components of a child’s education.  Music is fun and exciting but not always easy. However, with time and structured practice, the rewards are plentiful.

Practice is different for each level.  As the student progresses, practices become more demanding and more time is needed.   A daily practice routine is recommended.

Missed Lessons

We want each student to experience the excitement of weekly progress; the key to success is consistent practice and attendance. If you must miss a lesson, please notify Prelude Music Academy at least one day (24 hours) in advance. As this time is reserved exclusively for the student, with no opportunity to book a different student in the time slot, last moment lesson cancellations, no shows or tardiness do not qualify a student for a make-up lesson and the missed lesson will be charged, regardless of method of payment or point in time.

If a student is unable to make a weekly lesson due to illness or a school function, a make-up lesson will be scheduled at a later date determined between teacher and student. Lessons missed by the instructor will be rescheduled at a time convenient to both the student and the instructor.

Students are allowed a maximum number of four make-up lessons for cancellations occurring between September 1st – June 10th. Payment is expected in full each month and make-ups given accordingly.
